What are credits?
Credits are how you pay for audio narration and illustrated storybooks. Writing story text is free, within a fair use limit of 50 text-only stories a month and 10 stories a day — once you add audio or a storybook, a story stops counting towards the monthly limit.

Fair use
Story text is free for all users. To keep the service running smoothly, there's a fair use limit of 50 free text stories per month and 10 per day.
Only text-only stories count towards the monthly limit, so adding audio or a storybook to a story returns a slot straight away.
The daily limit is different: it counts every story you make that day, including ones with audio or a storybook, so if you reach it the answer is simply to come back tomorrow.
